Shall We Knit? blog

a bit of yarn

working-men.jpglast weekend while the guys were working on the counter and moving things I wound a bit of yarn.  Janelle is going to be teaching a class on the Moderne Quilt Wrap.  It calls for 9 colours of Kidsilk Haze.  Now don’t get me wrong – I love my Kidsilk as much as the next addict but if you go on Ravelry I would guess 90% did them out of exactly what it calls for – colour and all.
So Janelle and I changed it up a little.  Hers is in mohair but not necessarily Kidsilk – in Fall tones, gold, orange, red…those colours.  And mine is almost monochromatic, greys, black, brown with a little blue & green.  And mine is in lace weights with just a ball or two of mohair.

moderne-quilt-wrap-2.jpg  +lots of winding =  moderne-quilt-wrap-1.jpg and this will be

and those little balls add up to 7898 yds or nearly 4 1/2 miles of yarn.  Good thing I don’t need anywhere near that amount.  Ok back to the shop – have to get it ready for the sale starting tomorrow!

uncle

ok, I call Uncle!  -17 whats with that?  I went home last night and started Tom’s thrummed mitts, well actually the cuff was done so I’m working on the thrumming.  BUT you know it’s really not a portable project what with all those bits of rovings wandering around.  But I do have to admit that sitting with a flannel quilt on your knee helps to keep them coralled.
alpaca-mitts.jpgSo I am going to do my basic Ann Norling mitt out of Superfine Alpaca in Red!  What better than red mitts in the winter.  Though for just a minute I pondered the Alligator mitts out of Stitch N Bitch Nation.

must – have – mittens – brrrr

OK, its -15 and the computer says that with the windchill it feels like -27 !  Too Cold!!  I think I must make mittens.  And since we just unpacked a box of Superfine Alpaca (superfine is referring to the loveliness of the alpaca not the weight) in some really luscious colours I think I must make mittens.  But don’t tell Tom – I’m supposed to be doing his Thrummed mitts which were supposed to be for Christmas.
I think I will work on that time continuum thing again so I can do both – NOW!

stuff…

I think my brain has gone into hibernation – I feel like I’m in squirrel-mode – lets bounce between a bunch of different things and then go sleep.  So here’s some bouncing…

Stitch (the monkey) has come back to the Grammie’s for some minor surgery, I gather there was a bit too much dancing and he has suffered a slight arm injury.  Angus (my small male dog – much smaller than Stitch!) is not sure of this thing and keeps sniffing at it and giving it strange looks.

If you’ve read the newsletter or the front page of the website than you know that our annual sale is coming up the end of the month.  So to help traffic flow at the cash counter we have moved the counter and the display case and …you know how once you move one thing it snowballs, well we’ve had a few snowballs.

our-shop.JPG This is how it looked, and here it is now.  shop-jan09.jpg It doesn’t look like a lot but the traffic flow is much better.  And this weekend my guys are building a box to move the counter 6″ taller – right now it’s just the wrong height and there’s all those wires under it.  I am going to be a happy girl when that is done.

Knitting – last night was the guild night and we had a techniques night.  It was a nasty night out but we still had a good turnout.  There were 5 stations set up that you could rotate around, Ashley did 2handed Fair Isle, Kara did cast ons & offs, Alfie did her magic and Debbie New did Freeform knitting (I really wanted to be over there) and I did the Moebius.  Have I told you how I love Cat’s Moebii?  LOVE them!  I think we got a few more addicts last night.  And just when you think you’ve got it mastered – whammo!!  I have been trying to do her tri-fold basket and am now on try 3.  It’s supposed to be called Tri-fold NOT 3 tries.  For some reason I keep putting one twist in and not three.  But I’m stubborn if anything.

And don’t forget the Ruby Red Sock Contest (and tea cozies) – we aren’t really starting till mid-February but people are already figuring stuff out for it.  And there is news to come about this – BIG NEWS!!!  soon
